Facebook in Reality

You've probably seen this but it's really funny :)

  1. It's actually pretty scary in some ways. Clearly, it's not something we would ever do in real life, but somehow online it seems acceptable. The whole idea of a digital personality that is free to be who and what you want it to be is what Web 2.0 is all about. Can you imagine what Free to be You and Me would sound like today?

"Come along, be my friend, and we'll share til the end. Be my friend, come along and you'll knoooooow. Everything that I do. Everything that I say. Every picture I see. And you & me are always linked, yeah, you and me."

I just came up with that. Heh - I kind of like it. :-)

  3. Robin,
That's exactly what I was going for...this is really thoughtful musing...I really appreciate when there's reflection about the educational implications of social media...I'd love to make this a place where that kind of conversation elevates our trains of thought so thank you!

So when we post links like the one here, it's more enriching to also hear the WHY of why you like it?

anyone else care to take it from here?

  4. In all good comic writing, there is always a hint of truth.

To me, this makes clear the divide between online and (I'm actually reaching for the right word) real contact. While there appear to be widely accepted norms about how we communicate and interact face to face, online interaction in a web 2.0 context is still evolving and there seem to be a variety of ways deemed acceptable to communicate that we may think strange when speaking person to person.

While facebook and similar social sites give the impression of community, the web allows for a different approach to human interaction that in some ways "redefines" community. Think back to the article commented on earlier about "friends" and what I would call a more publicly graphic representation of friendship. Today you are listed on my page as a friend, tomorrow you on gone. View my page and you see how many friends I have, their gender, location, how many I communicate with on my page, etc. Meet me face to face and you might talk to me for hours and know little about my circle of friends.
